Application deadline for sturgeon spearfishing licenses in the Upriver Lakes is approaching

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reminds sturgeon spearfishermen that August 1 is the application deadline for sturgeon spearfishing licenses in the Upriver Lakes.

Due to the higher success rate on Upriver Lakes, only 500 license holders will be selected to harpoon a sturgeon from Poygan, Winneconne or Butte des Morts Lakes during the 2025 sturgeon spearing season.

These spearing tags are allocated by lottery, with priority given to the applicants with the most preference points. For group applications, the point value is determined by the individual with the fewest points within the group. Spearers can also choose to purchase a preference point instead of applying for a tag.

Applicants selected to purchase a sturgeon spearfishing license in the Upriver Lakes will be notified by October 1.

Any license holder not selected in this drawing will receive a preference point for future drawings and may purchase a Lake Winnebago spearfishing license. Spearfishermen may apply for a Upriver Lakes license or purchase a preference point online through the Go Wild system or at any license vendor.

The 2025 sturgeon spearfishing season in the Winnebago System begins February 8, 2025, on Lake Winnebago and the upstream lakes Poygan, Winneconne, and Butte des Morts. The season is authorized for a maximum of 16 days or until one of the annual biologically determined bag limits is reached. Separate bag limits are established for each system: Lake Winnebago and the upstream lakes.

Manitowoc Gun Club hosts youth shooting program on July 16

The Northeast Wisconsin Youth Shooting Program, Inc. will host its next shoot on July 16 at the Manitowoc Gun Club, 3112 Clover Road, south of Manitowoc.

Youth ages 18 and younger receive one free round of targets (trap or skeet) and one free box of bullets to shoot the round.

Filming will take place from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

If this is your first shoot of the summer, a parent must sign release forms before a youth can shoot. If you have done the shoot previously at Maribel, no additional form needs to be signed.

DNR launches updated map app for public access areas

The DNR has announced a new web mapping application that will help people learn about Wisconsin public lands and plan their next outdoor adventure.

The Public Access Lands application is designed for desktop and mobile devices and offers easy-to-use tools. From state natural areas to state trails, lakeshores and rivers, Wisconsin offers an abundance of public lands for everyone to enjoy.

The Public Access Lands application makes it easy to find a state park, county forest or lake for hiking, hunting or fishing, a press release said. Open Managed Forest Law/Forest Crop Law lands are also included in this update.

“The updated Public Access Lands map app has been simplified with a clear screen and easy-to-use tools,” said Ann Scott, DNR land records officer. “Click on the screen to open links that provide information on DNR lands, public access, open private lands for hunting and other helpful features to help you find the perfect getaway.”

This web-based mapping application provides up-to-date property information, including maps, restricted areas, and links to web pages where available. To find specific opportunities such as fishing waters or hunting areas, select the “topic” you are interested in and the application will display the layers relevant to the activity.

The application also shows DNR parking and boat launches and complements the printed Public Access Lands Atlas, which contains 441 maps covering public lands, roads and waterways throughout the state.

Launch the Public Access Lands application or visit the DNR’s Public Access Lands webpage to learn more.
