Rookie Rece Hinds hits two more long home runs, Reds beat Marlins 10-6 and win the series

CINCINNATI (AP) — Rookie Rece Hinds hit two more long home runs to help the Cincinnati Reds to a 10-6 victory over the Miami Marlins on Saturday.

Hinds, 23, has hit five home runs and nine extra-base hits since making his major league debut on Monday. Only one of his home runs has been under 400 feet – a 397-foot grand slam on Friday night.

That’s the most extra-base hits by a player in his first six games in Major League history.

“I’m just completely focused,” Hinds said. “I’m looking for a spot and when I get it, I try to take advantage of it and not miss it.”

As the first batter of the third inning on Saturday, Hinds hit a 430-foot solo hit into the upper deck in left field. Then, with the Reds holding a 7-6 lead in the sixth inning, He hit another drive out of bounds left, a 454-footer that came off the bat at 112 miles per hour and scored two runs.

“It’s incredible to see,” Reds manager David Bell said. “Watching someone play baseball in that pure state is a lot of fun. I’m happy for Reese. These are big games for us. He’s made a big contribution since he’s been here.”

Elly De La Cruz and Jeimer Candelario hit two-straight home runs in the third inning, and Spencer Steer and Santiago Espinal also hit home runs for the Reds, who beat the NL’s worst team for the second straight day after winning three of four games against Colorado earlier in the week.

Jake Burger and Josh Bell hit two home runs in the third inning for the Marlins against Andrew Abbott, who had one of his worst outings of the season. The Reds left-hander allowed five runs and seven hits in 3 1/3 innings. Seven relievers held the Marlins in check the rest of the game.

Sam Moll (1-1) made the third out in the fifth inning and took the win.

Marlins starter Edward Cabrera (1-3) fared worse. He also lasted only 3 1/3 innings, allowed seven runs and six hits and struck out seven players.

Burger had four hits and scored four runs, and Bell had two RBIs for Miami. The Marlins beat the Reds 15-10, but left 14 runners on base.

“The hard part was that every time we scored, they hit back,” said Marlins manager Skip Schumaker. “We didn’t get that inning done.”

The Reds, who lost up to ten games under .500 this season due to injuries, have now fought their way back to two games under .500 and are in the race for the NC Central, seven games behind league leader Milwaukee.

“There is a lot to be said for going into the break with a good feeling,” said Bell.
