Katy Perry claims after criticism that the video for “Woman’s World” is “satire”

Katy Perry apparently responded to criticism of the video for her new song “Woman’s World” in a post uploaded to social media on Saturday.

“Woman’s World” was released on Thursday and was immediately met with scathing criticism (see here, here and here, for example). The reason for this was less the song itself (which was co-produced by Dr. Luke) but the accompanying music video, which was accused of catering to the male perspective, as opposed to its empowering, if outdated, message.

Perhaps anticipating backlash while filming the video, Perry shared a behind-the-scenes clip from the filming of “Woman’s World” in which she explains her logic behind the video’s more controversial moments.

“We just enjoy being a little bit sarcastic, it’s very slapstick and very in-your-face,” Perry said of the first half of the video, which features gratuitous full-body shots of the singer suggestively pouring whiskey on herself and pretending to pee in urinals.

“And on this set, it’s like, ‘Oooh, we’re not about the male gaze, but we’re really about the male gaze,’ and we’re really overdoing it and taking it to the extreme because I’m about to get drunk, which is like a reboot, a reboot for me and a reboot for my idea of feminine divinity, and after that we enter a whole different world.”

The “reset” Perry is referring to is the moment in the video when the construction scene ends with the singer being “smashed” by an anvil, after which the image takes on a tone more in line with Perry’s “idea of female divinity.” (However, this part of the video also features another of the more reviled moments, when Perry shoves a gas pump nozzle up her butt to fill up her car.)

“We wanted to open this video to look like a pop star video polished to a high shine, and it is,” Perry added, noting in the clip’s caption, “THEY CAN DO ANYTHING! EVEN SATIRE!”

“Woman’s World” is the first single from Perry’s upcoming album 143their first LP since 2020 Smile“I wanted to create a bold, exuberant and celebratory dance-pop album whose central message is the symbolic expression of love in the number 143,” she said in a statement about the album.

In June, Rolling Stone reported that Perry had met her former Teenage dream Collaborators Dr. Luke, Max Martin and Stargate for the new album, as well as some others she hasn’t worked so closely with in the past. “Katy knew exactly what album she wanted to make and put the team together to make it happen,” a Capitol Records source said Rolling Stone. The decision to collaborate with Dr. Luke again, especially on a song about women’s empowerment, also met with criticism.
