Republicans JD Vance and MTG blame Democrats after Trump shooting

While most politicians quickly released statements condemning the violence at Saturday’s rally where former President Donald Trump was shot, some Republicans criticized the Democrats’ rhetoric after the fact. These included Donald Trump’s possible vice presidential nominee, Senator JD Vance, and the far-right, Trump-supporting agitator, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

“Today is not an isolated incident,” Vance wrote on X. “The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs. This rhetoric led directly to the assassination of President Trump.”

“The Democrats wanted this to happen,” Greene posted on X. “They have wanted to get rid of Trump for years and are willing to do anything to make that happen.”

She went on to call out members of Congress who, she wrote, “co-sponsored legislation to END Trump’s Secret Service protection. Why would they want to do that? You know why.”

Writing before it was confirmed that a bystander was killed, she continued, “Others may have been killed – innocent people who were there to support President Trump and who wanted nothing more than to make America great again, and they may have been murdered for it. Thank God the Secret Service was there for Trump and everyone else at today’s rally.”

Both Vance and Greene will speak at the Republican National Convention this week.

Republican Rep. Mike Collins of Georgia was also quick to attack Democrats after the shooting. In a tweet, he quoted a statement Biden made earlier in the week: “Joe Biden gave the orders.” At the time, as the president sought to put questions about his age behind him after a disastrous debate performance, he said: “I have only one job, and that is to beat Donald Trump. I am absolutely certain I am the best person to do it. So, we are done with the debate, it’s time to hit Trump in the bullseye.”

Collins continued: “The Republican District Attorney in Butler County, Pennsylvania, should immediately file charges against Joseph R. Biden for incitement to assassinate.”

Conservative commentator Charlie Kirk referenced trending topics on X to argue that Democrats wanted Trump dead, showing that the phrases “A JOB,” “HOW COULD YOU MISS IT,” and “THEY MISSED IT” were trending.

The moment is likely to spark conspiracy theories, with numerous posters online quickly claiming the shooting was staged—the word “staged” was trending on X, Australian news portal news.com.au noted.

President Joe Biden immediately condemned the violence, saying in a statement that he was “grateful” that Trump was safe and that he was praying for Trump, his family and everyone else at the rally.

“There is no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as a nation and condemn it,” the president’s statement continued.

Shortly after the statement was released, Biden appeared live before the press and cameras and made further remarks.

“Look, there is no place for this kind of violence in America. It’s sick. It’s sick,” the president said. “It’s one of the reasons we have to unite this country. We can’t allow this to happen. We can’t be like this. We can’t tolerate this.”
