The 56-year-old actor and comedian immediately reacted on social media on Saturday to the tragic news that Simmons died on Saturday in his home in Los Angeles. The eccentric fitness guru, who celebrated his birthday on Friday, turned 76.

“Just learned like everyone else that the wonderful Richard Simmons has passed away. I hope you are resting in peace and shining in heaven,” he wrote in a post that included a photo of Simmons. “Please give my mom Mitzi and dad Sammy a big hug and kiss from me. You are one of a kind Richard. An incredible life. An incredible story. They broke the dolphin shorts when they made you. Rest in peace my friend. Rest in peace.”

Shore and Simmons disagreed about the actor’s biopic about the late fitness coach named The Court Jesterwhich premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January. Simmons was not on board with the project, despite Shore’s repeated requests.

“Richard and I do not support this project. It is unauthorized. I spoke to Pauly last year and told him (Richard) that he was not ready to tell his story,” a spokesperson for Simmons told ET earlier this year.

Simmons repeated the opinion on Facebook saying“Hi everyone! You may have heard that they are making a movie about me with Pauly Shore. I never gave my permission for this movie. So don’t believe everything you read. I no longer have a manager or a publicist. I’m just trying to live a quiet life and be peaceful. Thank you for all your love and support. Richard.”

In April, Shore took to social media to say he had been “up all night crying” after learning that Simmons disapproved of the project. long caption On Instagram, Shore said that no one was better suited to play Simmons than him. The actor also begged Simmons to listen to him.

“Richard, you haven’t even heard what we pitched to you. Why don’t you just let me come to your house, bring you some warm matzo ball soup and a pastrami sandwich with dark mustard from Canters, give you a foot rub, and we can listen to author Jordan Allen-Dutton pitch you our idea?” Shore asked.

The following month, Shore made his intentions clear that he would continue with the project.whether he likes it or not.”
