Father John Misty releases new song “I Guess Time Just Makes Fools Of Us All” and gives a taste of a new compilation

Father John Misty has released a new song called “I Guess Time Just Makes Fools Of Us All” and hinted at an upcoming compilation album.

The singer-songwriter – real name Josh Tillman – sent a text to fans on his mailing list today (July 13) with a link to the song and a cryptic hint that more will follow shortly.

The message reads: “Hey, it’s Josh. There’s a new girl here – “I guess time makes fools of us all.”

“It’s on the record that’s coming out later this year (DON’T TELL ANYONE), but when the idea came up to do a compilation/greatish (sic) hits thing, we were definitely missing a 10-minute funk song to sum up what a deceptive and triumphant experience this whole thing has been so far.”

“It doesn’t exactly scream ‘single’ or anything,” he added, “but I wanted you to hear it.”

Tillman performed the song live several times in 2019 and then again at some shows in 2023. Listen to the song via this link. No further information has been released about the compilation he was referring to.

Last month, the artist promoted two new songs with short clips on social media, one of which, fans speculated, was titled “Josh Tillman And The Accidental Dose.”

Last year, Misty was one of Lana Del Rey’s opening acts for her headlining performance at BST Hyde Park. This came after the pair came together for the duet “Let The Light In” on Del Rey’s 2023 album Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd.

Father John Misty’s latest album, “Chloë and the Next 20th Century,” was released in 2022 and received five stars from NMEIn the review, Sophie Williams wrote: “‘Chloë and the Next 20th Century’ shows what Tillman’s imagination is capable of when set free to explore new and unpredictable sonic paths.

“‘Olvidado (Otro Momento),’ a dazzling bossa nova track on which he sings in Spanish, never quite settles, expanding its dizzying atmosphere into a thick beat of quiet, wide percussive flourishes. It’s a perfect example of how nothing on this album ends the way you’d expect – including the ever-evolving artist who made it.”
