Raphael Varane is close to moving to a new club after leaving Man Utd

According to a report, Raphael Varane has agreed to move to Italian club Como after the expiration of his contract with Manchester United.

The Frenchman’s contract at Old Trafford expired at the end of June and he was unable to agree new terms with the club, ending his three-year stay in England.

Varane has been linked with various teams since leaving United, but Fabrizio Romano reports that he has given his word to move to Como.

Contract details still need to be finalised and Varane has yet to undergo a medical, but the deal is “close to being finalised”.

Como’s assistant coach Cesc Fabregas is said to have played a key role in persuading Varane to move to the club.

Fabregas is expected to continue working under the management of Osian Roberts, who recently turned down the chance to take the job as Wales international. Roberts and Fabregas led Como to promotion to Serie A at the end of the 2023/24 season.

Varane had previously said he would like to play for one of his former clubs – Lens or Real Madrid – after leaving United, but neither made an offer. He has also been linked with clubs in the Saudi Pro League.

The centre-back left United after making 95 appearances for the Red Devils, and was also instrumental in their Carabao Cup and FA Cup triumphs in two seasons under Erik ten Hag.

Meanwhile, United are set to lose another French centre-back, with 19-year-old Willy Kambwala close to a move to La Liga side Villarreal. In terms of new signings, United are continuing to negotiate with Bayern Munich for Matthijs de Ligt and Everton have rejected two offers for Jarrad Branthwaite.
