Jamaican singer Mortimer releases new album “From Within”

MORTIMER RELEASES NEW SINGLE AND VIDEO FOR “MY CHILD”
& Announces release date of full debut and album title

From the inside out 20 September

Today, the Jamaican singer-songwriter Mortimer Messages “My child,” the fourth single from his highly anticipated debut album. The album, titled From insidewas produced by Winta James (often in collaboration with Mortimer) and will be released on September 20, 2024 by Overstand Entertainment and Easy Star Records. The new single, which is accompanied by an official music video directed by Dennis “Denni” Fyffe (whose credits include videos for Protoje, Lila Iké and Jesse Royal, among others).

From inside is a series of songs that tell a comprehensive story of Mortimer’s journey – of his loves and passions, his struggles along the way, his ability to overcome these trials, and how his Rastafarian faith and love of family have helped him get through it all. From the introspective, acoustic-led “Whole Heap” to the seductive, sensual dancehall groove of “Slowly,” followed by the driving, modern roots sounds of “Not A Day Goes By” and “My Child,” each of the LP’s singles released so far offers a wide and dramatic sonic palette. The release also delves heavily into melodies inspired by ’80s pop and R&B, as well as a surprising foray into the underrepresented subgenre of reggae disco. In a time when artists are pushed to constantly deliver content that disappears after a few weeks, Mortimer has taken the time to create a timeless piece of music that traces his personal journey in a way that will evoke a deep connection with his listeners.

Mortimer says the message of From Within is “to speak of an expression of the duality of human nature. To be emotionally up and down, dark and light, fire and water, and at the same time to be hopeful while we still suffer pain and anguish. The roses of the garden, if you will; thorn and petal. A representation of the coexistence of emotion, heart and mind, here and there.” “My Child” beautifully manifests this concept of dialectical duality and follows the brutally honest “Not A Day Goes By,” a stirring roots track that addresses Mortimer’s own mental health struggles.

Regarding “My Child,” Mortimer describes the song as “things I wish my father had told me and things I wish I had told myself… things I now tell my children and hope they will tell theirs. ‘My Child’ is a letter to myself and my descendants.”

“I also wanted to get rid of everything,” Mortimer continues. “Feelings that I have tried to process as best as I can over the years. With a feeling of gratitude for being alive and being able to give myself such a chance.”

The themes of the album are presented visually on From insideThe album cover of , photographed by Michael Moodie, shows a close-up of Mortimer’s face surrounded by flowers. Mortimer says: “The flowers represent human nature: fragility and beauty, softness, a breath, the heartbeat of life, the possibility of still growing and blossoming.”

A key player in the current wave of Jamaican reggae, Mortimer has made a significant impact in his short time in the industry. His own singles as well as standout guest appearances on tracks by Protoje, Keznamdi, Jaz Elise and Khalia have helped build his reputation and fan base. More recently, Mortimer has been featured as a narrator for Winta’s Gratitude Riddim and collaborated with Samory I on “History of Violence,” which appeared on Samory I’s Strength (the only reggae album on Rolling Stone’s Best Albums of 2023 list). He also covered a classic David Bowie song (“Soul Love”) on Easy Star All-Stars’ 2023 album Ziggy Stardub. This spring, Mortimer completed a month-long European tour alongside Samory I and Tippy I Grade, playing to enthusiastic, sold-out crowds in England, Germany, Switzerland and more.

In the coming weeks, this rising star will announce the album’s track list as well as additional singles and videos leading up to the album’s release on September 20th.
