Two people charged in death of Wichita Falls man shot while barbecuing

According to court and jail records, two men were in Wichita County Jail on Saturday and charged with capital crimes.

Marqwon Griffin and MH Griffin III are accused of shooting 50-year-old Brandon Lane Clampit on June 20 in the 1500 block of Smith Street.

Both men were being held Saturday in the Wichita County Jail on $750,000 bail each and charged with felony terroristic threat or another crime, online jail records show.

Marqwon Griffin was also being held on $100,000 bail on a charge of aggravated robbery. Police allege he stole a cellphone from a woman at gunpoint on June 15, several days before Clampit was shot.

Anyone charged with a crime is presumed innocent until convicted in a court of law.

According to arrest warrants issued in the case, Wichita Falls police were able to access surveillance video from the crime scene as well as Clampit’s cellphone, which contained messages about an illegal drug deal.

The affidavit states that the video shows the clothing the suspects were wearing as they approached the crime scene and even the muzzle flash of the gunshot.

Police pursued Marqwon Griffin on Thursday in a supermarket on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. After a short chase, he was arrested.

Police also obtained a search warrant for Marqwon Griffin’s apartment on Gerald Street.

According to a Wichita Falls Police press release, the SWAT team arrived at the residence late Friday afternoon and detained several people for questioning.

One of them was MH Griffin, who told officers Clampit was shot during a marijuana deal, police said. He said Marqwon Griffin discussed the deal with Clampit by cellphone, and he and Marqwon approached the man as he was grilling food outside his home.

MH Griffin said that when the transaction was completed, Marqwon pulled out a gun and demanded that Clampit give him everything he had.

He said Marqwon Griffin then shot Clampit with a 9-millimeter handgun and the two suspects fled the scene, the charges state. Marqwon Griffin declined to speak to police and requested an attorney.
