Thunderstorms with 60 mph wind gusts, one-inch hail possible in Michigan on Sunday

The National Weather Service is warning of the possibility of severe thunderstorms in Michigan on Sunday.

The weather service’s Detroit office said there was a “slight risk” of severe thunderstorms early in the morning and again in the afternoon and late evening. The main dangers were wind gusts up to 60 mph and hailstones 1 inch or larger in diameter.

Heavy rainfall and local flooding are also possible, the weather service said.

Consumers Energy said it is preparing corporate and contract teams from Michigan and 13 other states to respond to possible power outages.

“Even though we just finished responding to flooding and other severe weather this week, it’s important to know that we are not letting our guard down,” said Chris Laird, vice president of electricity for Consumers Energy, in a press release. “We will make sure we are prepared for whatever Mother Nature brings this weekend.”

Consumers Energy’s Storm Restoration Team is monitoring the weather forecast and will deploy mobile storm units with supplies as the storm’s path and impact become clear to help speed power restoration, the utility said.

Laird encouraged Michigan residents to prepare for the possibility of severe weather. Some tips include:

Charge all electronic devices and have a backup battery or charging station ready in case of a power outage. Battery-operated radios are recommended.

Prepare an emergency kit that includes flashlights and spare batteries, water, non-perishable food, and blankets. Bring plenty of medications, baby items, and pet food if necessary.

Unplug sensitive electronic devices such as televisions, computers and printers. Turn off power strips.
