Ty Gibbs takes pole position in the Cup Series at Pocono

Ty Gibbs scored his second pole in the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series on Saturday (July 13), securing the pole for Sunday’s race at Pocono Raceway with a time of 52.929 seconds.

Gibbs completed the day’s qualifying win for Joe Gibbs Racing after Sheldon Creed took the pole position in the NASCAR Xfinity Series on Saturday morning. Gibbs was the last Group B car to gain time.

William Byron was the fastest of the Group A cars and secured second place on the outside of the front row.

Martin Truex Jr., Denny Hamlin and Josh Berry completed the top five in third through fifth place.

Notable on the final lap was Spire Motorsports’ Zane Smith, who made the final lap for the first time in his Cup Series career. Smith will start in the 10th position on Sunday.

Corey LaJoie touched the outside wall on the exit of Turn 2 and went green. LaJoie still qualified 30th with minor damage.

JJ Yeley’s No. 44 did not submit a qualifying time.

NASCAR has decided to use an alternate start-finish line for practice and qualifying at Pocono. Although this procedure has been used on road courses in the past, this is the first time it has been used on an oval in the Cup Series.

The passing line is located between turns 2 and 3.

Coverage of Sunday’s The Great American Getaway 400, presented by VisitPA.com, begins at 2:30 p.m. ET live on USA Network, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
