RPG Maker/Pixel Game Maker developers switch to Godot for Action Game Maker

RPG Maker/Pixel Game Maker developers switch to Godot for Action Game Maker

Well, this is certainly interesting. Gotcha Gotcha Games, known for the RPG Maker series and Pixel Game Maker, has announced Action Game Maker and it is being built using the open source Godot engine.

The new Steam page announced that it was “designed as a successor to Pixel Game Maker MV,” which adopted their visual scripting inspired by the RPG Maker series, but for a wider range of 2D action games. Their current codebase made it difficult to expand and came with many limitations, so they “decided it was in the long-term best interests of our users to develop a brand new Maker title, built from the ground up using a new framework,” and that’s where Action Game Maker comes in.

Much like their previous RPG Makers and Pixel Game Maker, it will be a no-code game creation tool that is “built on top of Pixel Game Maker MV’s node-based visual scripting system,” so you don’t need to master line-by-line programming. And since they’re building it on Godot, it will offer a number of advanced features for those who want them, as noted on the Steam page:

Advanced engine technology with Godot Engine!

Benefit from the excellent 2D functionality of the Godot Engine, the popular open source engine behind ACTION GAME MAKER!

  • UI design based on the existing Godot user interface
  • For those who want to go beyond visual scripting, GDScript support is offered.
  • A complete 2D pipeline
  • Tile map editor with auto-tiling function
  • Supports both sprite and 2D bone animation systems
  • Access to Godot’s extensive particle and shader systems, as well as support for dynamic lighting and shadows, enabling a full suite of graphics features!

Maybe this time there will even be a proper Linux version so that more games can be developed under Linux.
