The Boys and Girls Club honored 36 students for their work outside the classroom

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KERO) – The Bakersfield Museum of Art is hosting a special tribute to the Boys and Girls Club’s summer interns.
I was able to speak to some interns who told me about their experiences.

  • The Boys’ and Girls Club summer program prepares students for real-life success.
  • Boys and Girls Club Internship Program: 36 local students participated in summer internships.
  • There were 140 applicants, of which 36 made it through two rounds of interviews.

After seeing her sister go through the program, Hailey Donoso started as an intern.

Inspired by her mother’s dishes, she is happy that her internship has allowed her to explore her future goals.

“I actually want to be a chef, and this has kind of helped me learn how it works. Definitely how a kitchen works and stuff. I never knew how to make a pizza before, and now I do, so that’s a really good skill to have now.”

Tatiana Gonzalez says she’s going to college…and working with her manager and coworkers in a hectic environment has brought her out of her shell.

“It helped not only me but my other interns as well, just talking to each other and starting conversations with people, and I think that’s one of the benefits that will benefit me when I get to college.”

There were over 140 applicants, of which 36 were selected after two rounds of interviews.

Ruth Miranda, regional program director for the Kern County Boys and Girls Club, tells me the summer jobs program has two parts: interns are prepared and trained for entry-level employment and complete an internship at select locations based on the student’s interests.

“They are being prepared for their first job they ever have and what a great way to enter the working world than to have the support of an internship.”

The Boys & Girls Club expects students to have the following skills:

-Apply for a job
– Interview with an employer
-Writing a resume
-Job responsibility and more

“Enjoy it, enjoy the experience, because honestly the program went really fast and even though I just started, it’s over in a minute.”
