Donald Sutherland, a Canadian actor who appeared in more than 200 films and television shows during his decades-long career, died Thursday at age 88. The actor appeared in a Kentucky-themed film and in a franchise featuring Kentucky natives. Jennifer Lawrence.

Donald Sutherland, famous actor, dies at 88

Sutherland, who appeared as Coriolanus Snow in the “Hunger Games” films and played Hawkeye Pierce in “MASH,” died on Thursday at the age of 88 following a long illness.

His son Kiefer Sutherland posted a message on X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday. “It is with a heavy heart that I must inform you that my father Donald Sutherland has passed away. I personally consider him to be one of the greatest actors in film history,” the caption reads. “He was never discouraged by a role, whether good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved and you can never ask for more than that. A fulfilling life.”

Sutherland, often known for his role as Coriolanus Snow in The Hunger Games, has appeared on screen throughout the series with Katniss Everdeen, played by Jennifer Lawrence. Lawrence is originally from Indian Hills, Kentucky, northeast of Louisville.

Between 2012 and 2015, Sutherland appeared in The Hunger Games, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2.

Sutherland’s ties to Lawrence aren’t his only connections to the Bluegrass State. He appeared in the 1977 film Kentucky Fried Movie.

“Kentucky Fried – The Movie” with Donald Sutherland

The 1977 Kentucky Fried Movie, directed by John Landis, features Sutherland as “The Clumsy Waiter” throughout the film. The comedy features a number of sketches and parodies featuring stars such as Cleopatra Schwartz, Big Jim Slade and others.
