The Russian army has lost at least 10,014 soldiers in the war in Ukraine over the past six months, according to a joint investigation by BBC Russia and Russian broadcaster Mediazona published on July 12.

The study identified over 10,000 Russian soldiers killed in the last six months. In total, the names of 59,168 killed Russian soldiers were identified.

The research was conducted using publicly available sources, including obituaries published in the media and social networks, as well as photographs of graves and military memorials.

The actual death toll could be significantly higher, BBC Russia said.

The largest group of victims continues to be former prisoners of war, who account for 20 percent of all reported losses.

Meanwhile, 14% of those killed were volunteers and 12% were mobilized and serving on behalf of the Russian armed forces.

Russia has lost 3,725 officers at the front since the start of the large-scale invasion in 2022.

On July 5, The Economist reported, citing leaked U.S. Department of Defense documents, that between 462,000 and 728,000 Russian troops had been killed, wounded or captured in the invasion of Ukraine by mid-June.

According to The Economist, these numbers exceed the number of Russian troops preparing for the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The Ukrainian General Staff estimates that Russian military personnel losses exceeded 500,000 at the end of May.
