Hershey evens series 3-2

Hershey evens series 3-2

They never said it would be easy.

However, taking a lot of penalties in the second and third periods was nowhere near the description and I had specifically said that they should do that. avoid do.

Game Notes

  • The Firebirds and Bears really gave it everything they got. Hershey rebounded from Game 3 in a big way and Coachella Valley had to work hard to keep up with them. That’s to be expected, it’s the Calder Cup Finals. If it were easy, it would be over by now. Today’s game was unfortunately decided by the Firebirds being a little out of shape early on in terms of discipline… and the penalty kill, which had been solid all night (thanks to some fitting minor penalties), breaking off at the worst possible time in the third period. Hunter Shepard just had to keep the door shut for 16 more minutes and a Game 6 was on the cards. It is what it is.
  • It was a pretty chaotic night in front of both teams’ nets. Both Driedger and Shepard got away with losing the puck in the crease more than once, and it was only by sheer luck that the score didn’t end up 8-5, as both sides were so poor at blocking shots and defending their net.
  • Shane Wright scored the first goal for the Firebirds with a power move on goal, surpassing his point total from last year’s playoffs in a fraction of the time. I’ve said it before, but this kid is ready. The goal for real style, however, goes to Ryker Evans, who absolutely tore through the Hershey defense and blew through a shot on his knee. If nothing else, these guys have style.
  • The Firebirds’ hero in this game was Marian Studenic, who provided two important assists for goals by Evans and Wright. Well done!
  • One thing the Firebirds desperately need to work on is a power play goal. They’ve only managed 1 in their last 10 attempts, although that’s partly because they’ve struggled to get a man advantage until tonight. Take advantage when you get one, gentlemen!
  • I’m not worried yet. The Firebirds probably expected this kind of game from Hershey and were able to make up for their slow start. I just have to react on Saturday.

Game 5 is looming, as the Firebirds can take advantage of the desert heat one last time before alternating between Game 6 in Hershey and, if it comes to that, Game 7 in Coachella Valley.

While I would love to see the Firebirds win at home, let’s hope it doesn’t happen.

Game 5 begins on Saturday and the puck drops at 7:00 p.m. PT.

See you there.
