The Mower County Historical Society will host its next Lunchbox History event, “FAQs on Minnesota’s New Flag and Seal,” on Thursday, July 18, at 12:00 p.m. in the Pioneer Building with Dr. Anita Gaul of Minnesota West Community and Technical College.

Learn about the Minnesota state flag and how the designs for the new state flag and seal were chosen.

In 2023, the Minnesota Legislature approved the creation of the State Emblems Redesign Commission (SERC) and commissioned the commission to redesign the flag and seal of the State of Minnesota.

Over the course of four months, the Commission – with significant public participation – developed this new national coat of arms. Gaul, deputy chairman of the commission, will give an insider’s view of the redesign process and answer frequently asked questions about the process and the final products.

Gaul holds a PhD in history from the University of Iowa and currently works as a historian Lecturer at Minnesota West Community and Technical College in Worthington.

She is the author of The Women of Southwest Minnesota and the Great War, published by the Society for the Study of Local and Regional History (2018), and Homely Girls and Pretty Babies: A History of the Murray County Fair, published by the Murray County Agricultural Society (2013).

Gaul is also the author of numerous articles for MNopedia, the online encyclopedia of Minnesota, published by the Minnesota Historical Society.

The most Most recently, she served as vice chair of the State Emblems Redesign Commission.

Doors for this free event open at 11:30am.
