The job of a magazine cover is to make readers curious. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution, but four key aspects work together to evoke strong emotions: the subject of the photo, the visual power of the shot, the words on the cover and, crucially, the design that artfully ties it all together. “It’s a difficult, highly subjective balance,” says creative director Todd Kraemer.

Hagerty Drivers Club The magazine is aimed at a diverse and passionate audience of more than 850,000 club members, which means that each issue contains a wide range of material to suit different interests. For this particular selection process, the editorial team initially decided on three very different topics, which are described in more detail below. “We are always interested in learning what our members are passionate about,” says Webster. “So we also use this process to get their feedback.”

This decision meant the usual cover selection process went into overdrive. The team spent two days experimenting, debating and arguing vigorously for their favourites. The aim, as always, was to design a cover that would put a smile on members’ faces when they opened their mailboxes. The team whittled down the initial 70 options to these three.

TITLE 1: Horsepower

Car enthusiasts love horsepower – the power of an engine – and the September/October issue features a special feature that not only details the history of engine power, but also the era when hobbyists turned power into an industry. What better way to illustrate this theme than with the engine that brought big power to the masses – the Ford Flathead V-8? Our photo shows a Flathead tucked into a custom hot rod. The low camera angle and lighting add a certain dignity to a machine that’s usually hidden under the hood.

TITLE 2: Horsepower with Mustang and Lamborghini

As much as we love horsepower, the numbers do not describe the feel of an engine. The engine is a major contributor to the car’s personality – how it sounds, how it responds and, of course, how it pushes the driver back into the seat. To add color to the numbers, editor-in-chief Aaron Robinson drove two very different cars – a V8-powered Shelby Mustang and a V12-powered Lamborghini Miura – that have the same power but different engine technologies. How do they feel behind the wheel? We photographed the cars in a simulated drag race, with the smaller Lamborghini closer to the camera to visually represent the comparison piece inside while also honoring – in the words of the cover – the unconventional pairing.

TITLE 3: The Exotics

Rare exotics worth millions of dollars rarely appear in Hagerty Drivers Club Magazine because we focus on cars that our members own more often. However, there is a successor to the McLaren F1 – a car that most enthusiasts consider to be the best driver’s car of all time and is now worth tens of millions of dollars – called the GMA T.50. We brought both cars together – a major feat in itself – to create a story about how these rare birds compare to each other. We liked this cover image because of the movement it conveys, the position of the cars and how the road is heading straight towards the viewer.
