Maren Morris says in her new song after the divorce: “I hope I never fall in love”

Maren Morris feels comfortable alone at the moment.

The 34-year-old singer-songwriter and Grammy winner released the vulnerable track “I Hope I Never Fall in Love” on July 12 as the latest single from her upcoming EP. Break – and she doesn’t hide her negative feelings about romance.

In the mid-tempo song, Morris expresses her hope of remaining single after the rough end of a relationship. “I hope I never fall in love / I hope I never fall in love again / You can remind me of that,” she sings in the chorus.

She talks about wanting to hold on to her prospects to avoid another intense romance like the one that left her feeling despised.

“I’m a woman of her word / Honey, you only cheated on me / Forever was a damn lie, so goodbye / You only made it worse,” Morris explains in the song’s bridge.

The “My Church” musician, whose divorce from ex-husband Ryan Hurd was finalized in January, marked the song’s release with an Instagram post, opening up in the caption about her true feelings about romance — which are a bit more complicated than the song shows.

“‘I hope I never fall in love’ is the afterglow of a shit show,” wrote Morris, who has a four-year-old son, Hayes, with 37-year-old Hurd. “It’s a bittersweet heartbreak because I’m in self-protection mode but still want to feel something. Throw parties, go home with a stranger, pop champagne…”

She continued, “Whatever we need to do to process our pain, it’s not always a pretty path to healing. I obviously want to fall in love again, but I can’t bring myself to do it yet, so here’s a number about this strange but constructive (and destructive) window into my life.”

Last month, Morris introduced the Break Era with the Julia Michaels collaboration “Cut!” about appearing beautiful on the outside, but feeling like an emotional wreck in private.

“‘Cut!’ is about me keeping myself together throughout the day, looking well-rested, not a hair out of place, and not canceling appointments with friends because I want you to think I’m doing so well,” Morris said in a statement at the time. “Maybe those things are all true, but at night I drop the mask and let myself scream or fall apart to let the steam out of the boiler.”

“It’s a cathartic release that doesn’t require secrecy, but there are worldly expectations that have to hold you together despite your feelings,” she continued. “This song gives me permission to fall apart.”

Break will be released on August 2nd via Columbia Records.
