Martina Navratilova and Chris Everts’ 80-match rivalry blurred the lines between friendship and competition. Today, the legends sit side by side, watching the younger generation take over and reminiscing about their time. Unlike their dominance in the 1970s and 1980s, tomorrow will see a new Wimbledon champion. But before that, today is a special day for the ice maiden of the tennis scene. Evert won her first Wimbledon title on July 12, 1974, exactly 50 years ago! And Navratilova didn’t miss the occasion without showing tennis fans cracks in the ice.

How could someone highly “Brittle and orderly” Evert in a wild and life of a party? Navratilova knows how, “She drinks a glass of wine and is a different person.” And what followed next was “The dirtiest jokes” which “Nobody knows,” but Navratilova “I still remember some of them.” Although they have become friends, the competitive spirit is still very much alive in both of them and Evert was not going to put up with that. Evert is celebrating not only her first Wimbledon title this year, but also her first Roland Garros title win: a Channel Slam! And her good friend Navratilova certainly wasn’t going to let it go, as she asked Evert to present Iga Swiatek with the title she won for the first time 50 years ago. The “stuffy and decent” Evert thanked her on X as she stood next to the winner!

She said, “So, I presented the Roland Garros winner’s trophy last year; @Martina was asked to present it this year. As it was the 50th anniversary of my first victory, she asked me if I would help her present it… Generous and thoughtful, that’s my friend Martina!” Undoubtedly, the line between friend and foe disappeared for these two long ago!

On this special occasion for Evert, Jasmine Paolini takes the cake, as she becomes the first woman since Serena Williams (2016) to reach the finals of both the clay court and grass court Slam tournaments, thus joining the list of legends.
