Who was the most famous rock’n’roll artist from Memphis, Tennessee?

There is a simple answer to this question: Elvis.

This is particularly easy because the answer remains the same even if the question becomes more comprehensive.

Who is the most famous rock’n’roll artist ever?

Answer: Elvis.

The answer might be “The Beatles,” if you can consider a group of artists as “artists.”

Maybe Michael Jackson?

Even they will probably not enjoy the international, cross-generational recognition of the so-called “King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.”

ELVIS WEEK: Thousands of fans honor the King and Lisa Marie Presley at a candlelight vigil

Elvis was born on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi, and moved to Memphis with his parents at the age of 13.

It was here that he first rose to fame in 1954 after recording more than 20 songs in the so-called “Sun Sessions,” which took him to RCA, Hollywood and Las Vegas.

But Memphis – and more specifically Graceland, the mansion he bought in 1957 – remained his home until his death on August 16, 1977, at the age of 42.

As Elvis said in an interview in 1960 after returning from the Army, “You’ll never know how lucky I am to be here. This morning, someone asked me what I miss about Memphis, and I said, ‘Everything.'”
