Athens, Greece: Author publishes book on military sociology

“Dictionary of Military Sociology,” a new book by Dr. George Kaffes, has been published by Dorrance Publishing Co., Inc.

Although Moskos pointed the way into this specific field of military sociology, Dr. George Kaffes, a sociologist and lecturer at the Hellenic Army Academy for over thirty years, was of the opinion that an introductory but academic work was first needed in order to be able to offer a dictionary of the terms of military sociology.

From the small Greek island of Kastellorizo, where he finished this work, Dr. Kaffes’ aim, by compiling all these terms, including military sociologists and researchers, some eminent military leaders, a small but significant slang vocabulary and some operational terms, is to give any sociologist interested in military and society the opportunity to get their hands on this very special tool. Another aim of the Dictionary of Military Sociology is to highlight some terms of military slang, a colloquial language used by and associated with members of various armed forces.

Dr. George Kaffes is a military sociologist and has been teaching military sociology as a full-time professor at the Hellenic Army Academy for over thirty years. His research focuses on the sociology of violence and war, the sociology of terrorism, gender issues in the military and army sociology. He is married, has a daughter and speaks more than his native language, including Greek, French, Portuguese, English and German. His book is aimed at all researchers, military personnel, cadets and anyone interested in the field of military sociology.
