WhatsApp users will soon receive transcription of voice messages: report

WhatsApp is working on a new update that will bring a voice message transcribing feature to all Android users. Until now, the feature was limited to Google Messages on Pixel devices.

The feature has been in development for some time, but now appears to be ready for prime time and will be rolled out in multiple languages, according to a report from 9to5Google.

When the feature goes live, WhatsApp will display a pop-up to confirm that transcripts are available for incoming voice messages.

To use the features, users must first download a language pack or voice message transcription. The feature reportedly only supports five languages at present. These include English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian and Hindi.

Once a language pack is downloaded, the audio is analyzed before a transcript is created. Transcripts are created and stored on the device, while voice messages remain encrypted.

The feature will be made available to select users of the beta program and is expected to be rolled out more widely in the coming weeks.
