“The Voice” judge Blake Shelton reacts “inconsolably” to the death of country music legend Joe Bonsall

Blake Shelton posted a touching tribute online following the death of Joe Bonsall of the Oak Ridge Boys.

Joe died on Tuesday at the age of 76 from complications of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He was part of the legendary country band for over 51 years, but announced his retirement in January of this year due to his illness.

Blake posted a photo of himself on stage with the Oak Ridge Boys singing together on his Instagram story and Facebook page. The former judge of The Voice captioned the post: “I am heartbroken to hear of the passing of my friend Joe Bonsall.”

He added: “I NEVER saw Joe when he wasn’t smiling and full of life. He loved singing like no one I’ve ever met. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and brothers @theoakridgeboys. We all lost a special person today.”

After Joe’s death, the band continued their farewell tour. It was reported that Joe was planning to help record a new Oak Ridge Boys album later that year.

In his farewell post, Joe asked his fans to “continue to pray for him.” On X, formerly Twitter, he wrote: “Many of you know I have been battling a slow onset neuromuscular disorder for over four years. I am now at the point where I can no longer walk, so I have basically retired from the streets.”

“It’s just become too difficult,” he continued. “It’s been a great 50 years and I’m grateful to the entire band crew and staff of The Oak Ridge Boys for the constant love and support they’ve given me throughout it all.”

He concluded by saying, “I will never forget it and to those of you who have constantly supported me with your prayers, I thank you and ask you to continue to pray.”

Although they wanted to keep Joe’s ALS diagnosis confidential, after his death, in lieu of a funeral, the family is asking for donations to the ALS Association or the Vanderbilt Medical Center ALS and Neuroscience Research Center.
