A MAN OF THE PEOPLE

When I was 17 and the voting age was still 21, I rode my bike to Huddart Park in Woodside for what Pete McCloskey called a “Constituent Day.” Even though it was obvious I couldn’t vote, Pete took me seriously and listened to me. Everyone in the area knew Pete was going to win re-election, so he didn’t need my help in his campaign, but my first political campaign was that of Pete’s friend Sam Halsted.

Many years and elections later, I have met members of Congress, a presidential candidate, and all kinds of office holders and office-holder wannabes. That moment with Pete McCloskey is one of the greatest moments of my life.

A RARE JEWEL

I found this article great and very interesting. Thank you!

On a personal note, my father was campaign manager for Shirley Temple Black when she ran against Pete McCloskey. I was a disinterested teenager in high school – and more in line with McCloskey’s values!

I think there was even a Black fundraiser at our house in San Mateo – I skipped it and spent a day in San Francisco with some high school friends! I never met them!

Another great article about a very topical person – thank you very much!
