Song you must know: Mitch Tambo, “Ride On”

If you’ve ever wondered what the didgeridoo would sound like when paired with a stereotypical country tune, Mitch Tambo answers that question with the track “Ride On” from his latest album. Tambo Jamz, Volume 1.

Forget the current trend of country rap – “Ride On” combines country music with the yidaki in a social media-friendly soundbite of just over a minute in this unexpected but highly requested collection of instrumentals from the former Australia’s Got Talent Star.

Tambo’s genre-bending album took shape during the COVID pandemic. The increasing pressure to maintain a social media presence prompted him to take a creative leap and launch a content series called “Tambo Jamz,” where he showcased his musical prowess by performing different soundscapes in different settings.

Some of the videos have been viewed millions of times, earning the Gamiliraay artist recognition from fans and critics alike.

“Over the past few years, my followers have been asking me to release music from the Tambo Jamz content series,” Tambo said.

“When I parted ways with Sony Music earlier this year, I knew it was time to fulfill this request. My fans have been incredibly loyal and supportive throughout my journey. Australia’s Got Talentand I wanted to give them something they asked for.”

The project, Tambo said, reflects an essential aspect of his personality as an artist and proud Aboriginal person.

“I wanted to create something that defies categorization. As an evolving artist, I don’t want to be pigeonholed into a specific category,” he said. “This collection speaks to the universal language of music and celebrates the beauty of diversity. I also wanted to have some fun. The industry is so focused on streams, likes and followers that it puts a heavy burden on artists. So I decided to celebrate and enjoy the love of making music by providing a different listening experience and connecting with followers.”

“Ride On” is one of 60 tracks on Tambo Jamz, Volume 1the first release from Tambo’s new music label Walanbaa Music, released in partnership with global digital music company Believe.
