The world of country music mourns the loss of Joe Bonsall, member of the legendary Oak Ridge Boys. Joe died on July 9th from the effects of ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). He was 76 years old.

Joe joined the country vocal quartet in 1973. The band, known for hits such as “Elvira” and “Bobbie Sue,” is currently in the middle of a farewell tour. Joe’s illness forced him to leave the tour in January. At the time, the band announced on Instagram that Ben James would take his place.

According to a post from the Oak Ridge Boys’ official Instagram account, “Joe was a member of the Grand Ole Opry and was inducted into the Philadelphia Music Hall of Fame, the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and the prestigious Country Music Hall of Fame.” He has also authored 11 books, including an autobiography, I see myself: thoughts and memories of a blessed lifewill be released in November.

Reba McEntire, who has been friends with Joe for years, shared a heartfelt tribute to the singer on Instagram. Reba shared the stage with the band during the 1987 TV special “Thanks for Caring” and they honored President George HW Bush at his 2018 funeral.

She shared a photo with Joe from the 5th Annual ACM Honors in 2011 and wrote, “Joe, you were an amazing entertainer, singer and a wonderful friend! I will surely miss your smiling face and bubbly personality. Can’t wait to see you again. Love, Reba.”
