“Young Martin” prequel series in the works by Martin Lawrence

Martin Lawrence may have noticed the success of the Big Bang Theory Spinoff series Young Sheldon. The Bad Boys: Ride or Die Star is bringing back his own sitcom in a similar way, and it is even called The young Martin.




According to Deadline, Lawrence and his production company RunTelDat are working with Marvin Peart’s WonderHill Studios for The young MartinIn contrast to the original MartinHowever, The young Martin will not be a traditional sitcom. The prequel will be a Drama series with one-hour episodesin which the teenage Martin Payne copes with the “complexity of the transition from adolescence to adulthood”.

The transition from comedy to drama is similar to the path with The Fresh Prince of Bel-Airthe classic sitcom with Will Smith — Martin’s Bad Boys Franchise co-star. This show was rebooted in the form of Bel Aira much more dramatic version of the story, featuring reinterpreted versions of the same characters.

After the positive reception of the action comedy sequel, Will Smith, his co-star from “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” is getting his next big film role.


Peart said in a statement about the new series: “Of all the hit shows of the 90s, there was only one Martin – a show that defined culture and positivity. Martin reflected a real group of friends from our community who were seen on television screens around the world. I respected and admired Martin Lawrence for creating Martin Payne and what he did for African Americans on television in front of and behind the camera. In many ways, he influenced my path in the entertainment industry and it is an honor to work with Martin and his younger self and share him with the next generation of fans.”

Martin aired on Fox for five seasons from 1992 to 1997 and was one of the most popular sitcoms of its time. Most recently, several cast members reunited for a joint appearance at the Primetime Emmy Awards in January. The series is about Martin Payne (Lawrence), a DJ in Michigan who lives with his girlfriend Gina (Tisha Campbell). The show also starred Carl Anthony Payne II, Tichina Arnold, Jon Gries and Thomas Mikall Ford, who died in 2016.


The young Martin has no premiere date yet.
