John Wayne’s Grit series returns to Ridgway to fight cancer – The Tri-City Record

According to a press release, the John Wayne Grit Series returns to Ridgway, Colorado on Saturday, September 21st.

Located between Ouray and Telluride, the trail takes participants through the San Juan Mountains and offers a challenging half marathon and 5K experience in a single course. The event raises funds for the John Wayne Cancer Foundation.

The John Wayne Grit Series offers fundraising rewards for teams and individuals who raise money for the foundation during their running experience. Participants have the option to pay to register or pledge to fundraise. Each participant receives a John Wayne Grit Series shirt and finisher mug and can earn additional rewards. Each distance is timed and there are winners’ prizes and medals for the fastest male and female runners.

Ridgway was one of the original venues for the Grit Series races in 2019. The track traverses the area where much of John Wayne’s 1969 film The Grit was shot.

John Wayne was a strong advocate for finding a cure for cancer. A lung cancer survivor who died of stomach cancer in 1979, he was committed to helping others fight the disease. The cancer organization was founded in his honor.
