AEW’s Chris Jericho challenges top luchador to a match at CMLL’s 91st anniversary show

When Chris Jericho isn’t busy three-timing people or putting Samoa Joe through a wall, he’s back in Mexico and just a few weeks ago he attacked CMLL’s top star Mistico. The attack set the stage for a match between the two, but at the time no date for the bout had been announced. As it turns out, it was because CMLL was waiting for their biggest show of the year.

On yesterday’s episode of “CMLL Informa,” Jericho sent in a pre-recorded video, once again wearing a Mistico mask. After insulting the Lucha Libre legend again, Jericho challenged Mistico to a singles match at the CMLL 91st Anniversary Show, scheduled to take place on September 13th at Arena Mexico. Mistico immediately responded and accepted the challenge.

The oldest of all major wrestling shows worldwide, the CMLL Anniversary Show, commonly referred to as the Aniversario, first took place on September 21, 1934, beginning a streak that continues to this day. Only the 52nd Aniversario could not take place due to an earthquake the day before. While most Anniversary Show events are headlined by matches where the participants risk their hair or mask in a Lucha de Apuesta, neither Jericho nor Mistico addressed the subject, suggesting that the match will be strictly a one-on-one match.

The match will be Jericho’s first match in CMLL since September 95, when he unsuccessfully challenged Apolo Dantes for the CMLL World Heavyweight Title. Although Jericho competed in CMLL from 1993 to 1995 under the name Corazon de Leon, this will be the first time he will participate in a CMLL Anniversary Show.
