Santa Barbara Foresters host book event with Vin Scully before Saturday’s game against OC Riptide

Vin Scully served as the Dodgers’ announcer for 67 years before retiring in 2016.

The Santa Barbara Foresters will honor the memory of legendary Dodgers commentator Vin Scully with a book signing prior to the team’s game against OC Riptide on Saturday, July 13.

The Vin Scully Day event will feature the launch of the book “Perfect Eloquence: An Appreciation of Vin Scully,” recently published by longtime Southern California sportswriter Tom Hoffarth and published by the University of Nebraska Press. It begins at 3:30 p.m. and includes a special panel, audience Q&A and book signing.

The book includes 67 essays by people who were influenced by the life and legacy of Scully, who retired in 2016 after 67 seasons with the team and died in August 2022 at the age of 94.

The Perfect Eloquence staff in attendance includes Santa Barbara native Paul Vercammen, known for his long-time work as a reporter at CNN; Santa Barbara native Tom Leykis, an iconic radio host; and Jeff Proctor, a veteran television producer for live sporting events in Southern California and across the country who worked on the Scully broadcasts.

Tecolote Book Shop in Santa Barbara will be on hand for anyone interested in purchasing copies of “Perfect Eloquence.” Hoffarth will participate in a conversation with several of the book’s contributors, and the panel will include special guest Ron Shelton, the noted Hollywood screenwriter, director and producer — and native Santa Barbaran. Shelton recently wrote his own book, “The Church of Baseball: The Making of ‘Bull Durham.'”

The Foresters have an overall record of 17-8 so far this season and are currently in first place in the CCL South standings.
