Chris Coons jokes he’s “more of a Matt Damon guy” and supports Biden against George Clooney

Senator Chris Coons (D-DE) pushed back against actor George Clooney’s call for President Joe Biden to withdraw from his 2024 re-election bid, joking that he was “more of a Matt Damon guy.”

The Biden campaign co-chair criticized Clooney after the megastar wrote an editorial arguing that Biden had “saved democracy” during his presidency but that it was time to hand the Democratic Party’s 2024 nomination to another candidate. Coons argued that while he does not see Biden every day, he himself has never seen any signs of mental decline in the president and that Biden is always “focused and clear” when the two speak on the phone.

“Now there are some who have publicly stated that they had an encounter or an incident,” Coons said on the MSNBC show. Good morning, Joe“I think George Clooney said that. Now I’m wondering if George Clooney has actually spent much time in person with President Biden. I’m more of a Matt Damon guy than a George Clooney guy, but your question to me was, ‘Have you ever seen this?’ No, I haven’t.”

Coons has also expressed his support for Biden on social media. On X, he wrote that the United States has experienced nearly four “great years” under Biden’s leadership, compared to four “bad years” under former President Donald Trump. He also echoed Biden’s comment that he had a bad night at the presidential debate and encouraged people not to “write off Joe.”

Senator John Fetterman (D-Penn.) also made his support for Biden clear after the debate. At a campaign office in Philadelphia, he told organizers that the president was the only person in the state who had “kicked Trump’s ass in an election.” The senator also dismissed online comments calling for Biden to withdraw, writing “fuck that” under an article calling for Biden to drop out of the 2024 race.

Clooney’s comment came as many other celebrities were already suggesting Biden should resign, while others were heavily criticizing the actor for the suggestion. ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos, who conducted Biden’s first one-on-one interview after the debate, also expressed doubts that Biden can stay in the White House for another four years.

The disagreement over whether Biden should stay in the race comes ahead of next week’s Republican National Convention, where Trump is expected to become the party’s presidential nominee for 2024. Should Biden stay in the race and become the Democratic Party’s nominee in August, the stage would be set for a rematch between the two candidates.
