New Japanese banknotes are being sold online for up to 40 times their original value – SoraNews24 -Japan News-

It’s a good time to get great deals for … money.

Japan has a rich culture of online selling and you can find everything from curses to vintage air on internet flea markets and auction sites. Currently A unique item that is up for auction and sale is making waves on the Internet: cash!

The above GIF is a look at the Yahoo Auction Japan website with a large selection of brand new banknotes for sale. These are the new types of banknotes that came into circulation a few days ago and are causing all sorts of problems in vending machines and buses. However, this historic change in banknote design also brings with it historic banknotes.

Similar to banknotes in other countries, Japanese banknotes carry serial numbers that usually begin with two letters, followed by six numbers and one or two more letters. The first two letters are particularly important because they indicate when the banknote was printed.

A banknote beginning with “AA” indicates that it is one of the first banknotes ever printed.“AB” would mark the second pass after one million AA bills have been printed, and so on until “ZZ” is reached. If a bill is printed during this cycle, it starts again with a different color of ink.

▼ On this handful of old-style 1,000 yen notes, the leftmost note has the prefix “AJ” in brown ink, meaning it was probably printed around 2011. The blue-ink notes were probably printed after 2019.

Since this new series of banknotes has just come out, this is the perfect opportunity to grab some mint “AA” notes straight from the bank’s ground floor. Many people in Japan have been doing just that, knowing that even though the banknotes are just regular money now, their value will increase sharply in the coming years.

How much their value can increase depends on many factors and can only be estimated, but based on previous banknotes, it can be quite a lot. In the video above, foreign exchange expert Minoru Terada, who some time ago shattered our dreams of getting rich with one yen coins, said: A 1,000 yen (US$6) note with the serial number “777777” is worth 28,000 yen (US$174). And one with the serial number ZZ555555Zwhich means that it is the last batch of the code run and that it is a unique combination of numbers. costs 500,000 yen ($3,100).

▼ An older 10,000 yen (US$62) note with the serial number “ZZ-Z” is being offered for 35,000 yen (US$217) on Yahoo Auction.

Back to the newer banknotes, on Yahoo Auction, banknotes marked “AA” are trading at relatively modest premiums of 50 to 100 percent on average. However, at the time of writing, there are some outliers A bidding war is currently underway for a 5,000 yen (US$31) note with the code “AA123456JS,” with bids having exceeded 200,000 yen (US$1,200)..

Regarding compliance with the site policies on selling money online, Yahoo Auction only allows the offering of currencies with a collector’s value and evaluates each item individually.. The large Japanese flea market Mercari also allows the sale of collectors’ money, but seems to have much stricter controls there, because at the time of writing this article, no new notes are being sold there.

▼ But if you need tissue covers or towels that look like the new banknotes, Mercari is the place for you!

So if you happen to be in possession of one of these new bills and are annoyed that you can’t buy ramen with it, take a quick look at the serial number before heading to the store for change – you might be luckier than you think.
