These are the new types of banknotes that came into circulation a few days ago and are causing all sorts of problems in vending machines and buses. Similar to banknotes in other countries, Japanese banknotes carry serial numbers that usually begin with two letters, followed by six numbers and one or two more letters. The first two letters are particularly important because they indicate when the banknote was printed.

A banknote beginning with “AA” indicates that it is one of the first banknotes ever printed.“AB” would mark the second pass after one million AA bills have been printed, and so on until “ZZ” is reached. If a bill is printed during this cycle, it starts again with a different color of ink.
