Rep. Scholten of West Michigan calls on Biden to “resign”

WASHINGTON DC — Amid growing calls for President Biden to abandon his quest for re-election, West Michigan’s lone Democratic congressman is calling on the president to “resign.”

Representative Hillary Scholten released a statement on Thursday, July 11, saying it was time for “a new leader.”

“President Biden has served his country well,” she said in her post on X, “but for the sake of our democracy, he must pass the torch to a new candidate for the 2024 election.”

Scholten is the latest member of Congress to publicly call on Biden to withdraw from the 2024 election following his debate with former President Trump.

President Biden has left an incredible legacy during his life of public service. The President’s tremendous accomplishments on infrastructure, health care costs, climate change, and gun safety follow a distinguished career in the Senate that included groundbreaking achievements like the Violence Against Women’s Act. President Biden has spent his life serving our nation and building the next generation of American leadership. For the good of our democracy, I believe it is time for him to step away from the presidential race and make way for a new leader.

Ultimately, that decision is up to the President and the President alone. I will respect his decision if he chooses to stay in the race, and I will vote for him anyway, as a clear and necessary alternative to Donald Trump, who would sow chaos and destruction if he returned to the Oval Office. But the people of Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District elected me to represent them with integrity. They elected a Congresswoman they trust to tell the truth, even when it’s hard. They voted for someone who will put America’s future first and stand up for what’s right. That’s what I’m doing now.

Given the challenges our country faces in 2025 and beyond, it is imperative that we have the strongest possible candidate at the top of the ballot — not just to win, but to govern. Someone who can staunchly defend women’s right to choose their own health care while advancing the progress we’ve made in lowering health care costs and protecting workers. We need a standard-bearer who will fight morning, noon, and night for our civil and voting rights and unite the free world against the rising tide of authoritarianism. Joe Biden has long been that leader; but this isn’t about the past, it’s about the future. It’s time to pass the torch.
