Road closures in Michigan could slow traffic this weekend

If you’re traveling through Michigan this weekend, be aware of road closures and construction-related congestion.

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has planned over 60 road closures for Friday, July 12, through Sunday, July 14, in addition to several ongoing projects that began earlier this summer.

The major closures scheduled for this weekend include sections of I-75 in Wayne and Oakland counties, portions of M-8 in Wayne County and sections of I-96 in Livingston County.

All projects are weather dependent and state authorities remind drivers to obey posted signage.

Below are some of the road construction projects to be aware of this weekend. For a complete list of road construction projects, visit MDOT’s online map and construction site directory.

I-75 in Wayne and Oakland counties

In Oakland County, I-75 northbound from Dixie Highway to Saginaw Road will be completely closed for construction. The closure will begin at 9 a.m. Friday and last until 5 a.m. Monday, July 15.

In Wayne County, the I-75 southbound ramp to McNichols Road will be closed for maintenance at 9 a.m. Friday. The ramp will reopen at 7 p.m. the same evening. In addition, the left lane of I-75 southbound from I-96 to Vernor Street will be closed for maintenance from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday.

I-94 Business Loop in Berrien County

The northbound and southbound lanes of the I-94 Business Loop from St. Joseph Avenue to Marquette Road will be closed for construction beginning at 7 a.m. Friday. Motorists are asked to follow posted detours.

According to MDOT, the road is expected to reopen at 7 p.m. on July 21.

M-8 in Wayne County

The westbound M-8 ramp to Oakland Boulevard is scheduled to be closed Friday for construction. Workers will also close the right lanes of eastbound and westbound M-8 from Joseph Campau Street to Oakland Street.

All closures will take effect at 7:00 p.m. on Friday and last until 9:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Starting at 7 a.m. Saturday, the ramps from M-8 eastbound and westbound to I-75 southbound will be closed for construction. The ramps are scheduled to reopen at 9 p.m. Sunday.

M-36 in Livingston County

Starting at 4 a.m. Saturday morning, the eastbound and westbound lanes of the northbound US 23 ramp will be closed for construction. During this time, drivers will be detoured to travel north on Field Crest Road to Lee Road to the northbound US 23 ramp.

According to MDOT, the ramp is expected to reopen at 5 a.m. on Monday, July 15.
