Michigan’s surprising lack of love for fair food revealed

Michigan’s surprising lack of love for fair food revealed

I’m originally from the South, and fair food is a religion to us. Every year, the State Fair in my home state of Kentucky tries to outdo itself with increasingly absurd creations. From donut burgers and things on a stick to deep-fried Kool-Aid, if you don’t like it, they probably make the best version of it.

I’ve always believed that fair food is universally loved, but it turns out Michiganders aren’t a huge fan. In honor of today’s holiday (National State Fair Food Day), National Day has released some data on states that love fair food, and it turns out Michigan doesn’t have it so easy.

We rank 41st in the U.S. for love of fairground food, which means we’re just not a fan—or would rather avoid it altogether. So if you’re a fan of corn dogs, elephant ears, and anything deep-fried, you may be in the minority in your life.

It’s also kind of crazy that Michigan is so low on the list of most popular fair food, since the second state fair was held right here in Michigan, in Detroit in 1849. However, it only ran annually until 2009. Maybe we’ve lost the love of fairs? (They still happen today, though, so maybe we can get that love back?)

Whatever the case, if you’re a lover of these incredibly unique and fun fried foods, you won’t have to wait in line long when you visit your local fair this year.
