Satellite phones as an indispensable device after a disaster: Voice

Satellite phones are critical to hurricane preparedness

Outdoor Tech Lab highlights satellite phones as an important post-disaster resource

In the wake of the recent hurricane season, Outdoor Tech Lab highlights the critical role of satellite phones in disaster relief.

Since mobile networks and landline connections often fail during storms, satellite communications become a lifeline for the affected communities.

Important points:

1. Instant voice communication: Satellite phones enable direct person-to-person contact when other networks fail.

2. Wide coverage: Unlike cell phones, satellite devices work even in remote areas and during large-scale outages.

3. Access to emergency services: Victims can quickly reach first responders and coordinate rescue efforts.

4. Family reunification: Separated relatives can reunite after a disaster and encourage each other.

5. Sharing important information: Emergency managers can share important news with the affected population.

There are three types of satellite phones: regional, quasi-global and truly global. All types offer voice and SMS services, as well as basic data services (not enough for actual Internet access).

The only truly global satellite phone is made by Iridium, a US-based company. The company operates 75 satellites in low Earth orbit – 66 operational plus 9 spares – and six spares on the ground.

These phones offer satellite calling, SMS services, push-to-talk (Iridium 9575) and basic data.
Iridium also offers IridumGO, a small device that connects to your smartphone and allows you to make calls and send small amounts of data over the Internet.

In addition, the robust high-end models 9575 Extreme and IridiumGO have an emergency signal that can be used to transmit a person’s position to a special emergency service.

“After a hurricane, the ability to make a simple phone call can mean the difference between life and death,” says JC, founder of Outdoor Tech Lab. “Our analysis shows that satellite phones are often the only reliable method of communication in such scenarios.”

The Outdoor Tech Lab website provides in-depth testing and comparisons of leading satellite phone models, helping individuals and organizations make informed decisions about this important technology.
