WhatsApp adds voice message transcription feature to Android

WhatsApp adds voice message transcription feature to Android

In our June WhatsApp features list, we mentioned that the messaging app is working on a voice transcription feature for Android. This feature will allow users to view the content of a voice message in text form. With the latest beta update for Android, some WhatsApp users are getting the voice message transcription feature.

First spotted by WABetaInfo, this feature comes with WhatsApp Beta for Android v2.24.15.5 and is currently rolling out to a limited number of users. We updated the messaging app to the latest beta update but did not receive the feature on our device and thus were unable to test it.

To use this feature, you need to download a language pack so that the app can convert the voice message into text. Only five languages are supported: English, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian and Hindi.

If you look at the screenshots, the feature looks quite similar to the implementation of voice message transcription via Google’s Messages app.

Voice messages remain end-to-end encrypted like All transcription is done on the device. This is probably why the app prompts you to download a language pack in the first place. The feature is still in beta, so don’t expect it to come out anytime soon, but it could be available later this year.

What do you think about the voicemail transcription feature on Android? Do you think you can use it? Honestly, I can think of a few situations, like when I’m on my way to work and I get a voicemail from my family that I’d rather not listen to on the subway.
