NEW YORK – Cedric Mullins hit a two-run homer to lead off a six-run second inning, Gunnar Henderson reached base four times and the Baltimore Orioles struck out rookie pitcher Luis Gil early in a 17-5 win over the New York Yankees on Thursday.

On a 90-degree day, the Orioles improved their record against the Yankees to 5-2 and set a major league record by winning their 22nd consecutive series against an AL East opponent, surpassing records held by the Atlanta Braves (1998-2000), Milwaukee Brewers (1991-92) and Cincinnati Reds (1975, 1969-1970), according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Henderson had two doubles on his three hits, extending the longest active on-base streak in the majors to 27 games and his hitting streak to a career-high 13 games. He also had an RBI groundout in the sixth inning.

Ryan Mountcastle hit a bases-clearing double and an RBI single in the ninth inning against New York catcher Jose Trevino. Anthony Santander hit a three-run home run, his 10th home run of the month (and his best MLB home run), and the Orioles moved to within a half-game of league-leading New York.

Ryan O’Hearn added an RBI double and scored four runs, while Austin Hays hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning as the Orioles collected 19 hits and scored their most runs since an 18-5 win at Cleveland on June 6, 2021.

Gleyber Torres hit a solo home run before leaving with a groin injury, and Aaron Judge hit his 27th home run, leading the major leagues, by hitting a two-run shot off Baltimore starter Cole Irvin in the third inning. CLEVELAND — Andrés Giménez hit a two-run home run and Will Brennan had two solo hits to help American League Central-leading Cleveland beat Seattle.

Brennan hit a home run in the second inning against Castillo and in the eighth against Trent Thornton, his first multi-home run game. He has hit eight home runs this season.

Dylan Moore hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Ryan Bliss had an RBI double in the fourth for AL West-leading Seattle. The Mariners lost for only the sixth time in 19 games since May 31.

Castillo allowed a season-high five runs in five innings, making him 1-5 in his career against Cleveland.

Nelson (5-5) needed just 70 pitches to get through seven three-hit innings, and he allowed two runs without walking a batter. The right-hander struck out two batters and retired 13 of his final 14 batters, winning back-to-back starts for the first time this season.

Nelson is 3-2 with a 3.60 ERA in his last six games. During that time, he has lowered his ERA from 7.06 to 5.18.

RAYS 7, TWINS 6, 10 INNINGS

MINNEAPOLIS – Jonny DeLuca’s line-drive single to center field in the 10th inning and a mammoth throw from center fielder Jose Siri allowed Tampa Bay to overcome a blown four-run lead and pull out a win in Minnesota.

Home runs in the ninth inning by Jose Miranda and Carlos Santana erased a 6-2 deficit before DeLuca converted reliever Griffin Jax’s sinker, scoring the automatic runner and giving the Rays the lead for good. Tampa Bay (36-39) improved to 26-11 in games decided by two runs or fewer, a major league record.

In the second half of extra innings, Siri caught pinch-hitter Carlos Correa’s flyout to center field and then struck down Royce Lewis at third base, setting up a double play. Closer Pete Fairbanks elicited another flyout to center field from Santana to end the game.

The Rays and Twins had spent most of a rainy afternoon tied before Richie Palacios came in as a pinch-runner for Isaac Paredes, who had come on with a single. Palacios then stole second base before leading off a double to left field by pinch-hitter Amed Rosario to break the 2-2 tie.

Siri and Yandy Díaz hit more home runs in the ninth inning against Jay Jackson, giving Tampa Bay a seemingly decisive lead.

CHICAGO — Yordan Alvarez hit a home run in the first inning and scored a run in the four-run seventh inning as Houston moved past Chicago.

Alvarez scored the 1-0 with a 439-foot shot to the right against Chris Flexen for his 15th home run, and his seventh-inning single tied the game at 3-3. The two-time All-Star finished the game with three hits after missing the previous two games due to a family matter.

Alex Bregman had three more hits and a run for the Astros, who picked up their second straight win after losing the first game of a three-game series to the team with the worst record in the major leagues.

Flexen went six innings and allowed one run and five hits. The White Sox fell to 20-56, their 26th loss in 32 games.

Chicago chased Astros starter Spencer Arrighetti with three runs in the fifth game.

Ohtani’s home run was his fourth in five games, and Smith and Freeman each hit their 11th home run to give the Dodgers a 5-0 lead over Ty Blach (3-5), helping the Dodgers to three of four wins against the Rockies.

Ohtani has hit 8-of-18 with two home runs, three doubles and six RBIs in four games as the leadoff hitter, moving up one spot in the rankings after Mookie Betts broke his left hand on a pitch hit on Sunday.

The Royals were undefeated this year.

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — Brendan Donovan hit a two-run homer and a double and St. Louis defeated San Francisco in the Negro Leagues Tribute Game at Rickwood Field on Thursday night.

The 114-year-old Rickwood Field is the oldest professional baseball stadium in the United States and the former home of Baseball Hall of Famer Willie Mays and the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro Leagues.

The first MLB game at this ballpark was to be dedicated to Mays and many other Negro League players and took on even more sentimental significance when Mays, the stirring center fielder who left a lasting mark on baseball, died on Tuesday.

Tributes to Mays continued throughout the week in Birmingham, including a pre-game ceremony on Thursday.

Numerous other Negro League greats were honored, including former Black Barons player Bill Greason, who threw out the ceremonial first pitch. The game also featured the first all-black umpire crew in AL/NL history.

SAN DIEGO – Jake Cronenworth hit a two-out home run in the ninth inning – San Diego’s fourth home run – to defeat NL Central-leading Milwaukee.

Cronenworth’s home run deep down the right field line against Joel Payamps (1-3) came after Fernando Tatis Jr. and Jurickson Profar retired. It was the left-hander’s 11th.

Tatis hit a 446-foot home run and added an impressive bat flip in the fifth inning, and Manny Machado and rookie Jackson Merrill also hit home runs for the Padres.

The Brewers scored two runs in the ninth inning against Jeremiah Estrada (3-1), who was attempting his second save. One run came on a wild pitch and the second on Rhys Hoskins’ double to left.

Tatis’ 14th home run landed near the top of the second deck in left field at Petco Park with one out in the fifth inning and a 5-3 lead. He knew he couldn’t do it anymore and threw his bat away at the bottom of his backswing. Left fielder Christian Yelich barely turned around when Tatis’s hit flew high over him.
