Star Wars Outlaws will feature a fog of war that will cover the game’s many maps.
Ahead of its release next month, Massive Entertainment has revealed brand new details about what to expect from its open-world action-adventure war of stars game, including how movement works and what the cards look like.
In a new interview with IGN, game director Mathias Karlson explained that when players first land on a new planet, it will be up to them to discover the sights themselves. This means that the map will not be littered with map icons or information, which is usually the case in most Ubisoft titles, such as the publisher’s. Assassin’s Creed games.
“Kay (the playable character) hasn’t seen the galaxy, she doesn’t know everything,” Karlson said. “When you first get to Toshara, you have a map where you can see mountains and stuff there, but discoveries give you more information.”
Julian Gerighty, Creative Director at Massive Entertainment, added that this means the planets and their respective maps will be surrounded by a fog of war and that the player will slowly uncover more and more through further exploration.
“You’ll have to take some risks,” Gerighty said. “You’ll have to go into a cantina (…) and you can overhear and overhear conversations there that will lead you to another location, which will reveal a place in the open world that you’ll have to find with your speeder. And there will be a fog of war that you can clear, and that’s where your curiosity will open things up even further.”
Star Wars Outlaws will be released on August 30, 2024 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Pre-orders are also available now. The game will be a single-player experience, but players can look forward to two additional expansions coming post-launch, one of which is called Jabba’s Gambit – “a day one exclusive mission” featuring the legendary crime boss.
