Dog and alligator have not eaten for weeks after the death of their Michigan owner

It’s always sad to hear of pets that have been more or less left in their homes after their owners have died. Sometimes you hear pretty gruesome stories about the aftermath, and sometimes you just feel for the person’s family and their pets who now need to find a new home or be adopted.

That’s what happened in a house in Michigan, for example: The owner was found dead and now authorities have to find a new home for his dog… and his pet alligator?

Detroit officials were dispatched to a home to check on the health of a person who had not been seen or heard from in some time. Upon entering the home, they found that the homeowner had apparently died of natural causes.

However, they also discovered the owner’s two pets, which apparently had not eaten in weeks – a dog whose name and breed were not disclosed, and a 4-foot-long female alligator, which the city named “Izzy.”

The police do not believe that the owner’s death was the result of a crime. We assume that the dog was either given to a family or to an animal shelter for adoption after a visit to the vet. However, the alligator is a different story.

“Izzy” is on her way to Athens, Michigan, to the Critchlow Alligator Sanctuary, where she will join dozens of other alligators that have been discovered either illegally or strangely living in the wild in Michigan and the surrounding areas.

Are alligators common in Michigan?

Strangely enough, alligators keep appearing in Michigan, at least once or twice a year. Earlier this year, one spotted in Kent Lake This frightened many residents there. In 2022 An entire alligator family was kidnapped from a house During an eviction hearing, several people claimed to have seen alligators in Lake Michigan.

People also reportedly saw a Alligator in the Kalamazoo River in 2023and Kalamazoo authorities also caught a small specimen crossing the road in 2022.

So it is needless to say that the Critchlow Alligator Sanctuary in Athen has been very busy over the last few years.

Just to clarify, it is VERY illegal to own alligators in Michigan, so… stop doing that. Let them enjoy their lives down south where it’s warm and humid and there are plenty of Florida men to munch on them.
