Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk is considering his future at club and national team after the Netherlands’ elimination from Euro 2024

Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk is considering his future at club and national team after the Netherlands’ elimination from Euro 2024

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk said he would consider his future at club and national team following the Netherlands’ semi-final defeat to England at the 2024 European Championships.

The 33-year-old Van Dijk had to watch on Wednesday evening in Dortmund as his team conceded a goal in the last minute against England and the Netherlands lost 2-1.

The central defender is captain of his club and his country, but his contract with Liverpool only has one year left to run.

When asked about his future after the defeat against England, Van Dijk told Reuters news agency that he had “no idea at the moment”.

“I will think carefully this summer about what I want at club level and as an international,” he added. “Then we will try again, but first we have to recover from this.”

“After a season like this, where all kinds of things have happened, it gets emotional at the end because you know it’s over.”

Van Dijk has been a regular for Liverpool in the 2023/24 Premier League season, appearing in all but two of their league games, for which he was suspended. In May, he said there was “no news” on his contract situation at the Merseyside club, who have since appointed fellow countryman Arne Slot as their new head coach.

Van Dijk also started all six of the Netherlands’ matches at Euro 2024, bringing his international appearance tally to 74.
