Beryl remnants hit counties in southeast Michigan

(CBS) — Several homeowners, businesses and other gathering places across Michigan are dealing with the effects of several inches of rain.

“I have never seen this much water in the 30 years I have been here,” said Adam De Lay, a deacon at Community Baptist Church in Davison who has been a member of the church for decades.

De Lay says he’s seen this area flooded before, but not to this extent. Looking at the standing water behind the church and his neighbors’ homes, he says they’ll have to wait and watch the remnants Hurricane Beryl just left in their backyards.

“Where do we put all this? Even the neighbors have tried to build their own sewers and equalization systems because this happens every year. Not to this extent, but it happens every year,” De Lay told CBS News Detroit.

The water has also reached their basement.

“We have had at least one area where we thought we had contained the damage in the past, but never to the extent that we are seeing now,” De Lay said, repeating what he had already said about the waters outside.

De Lay says the carpet that absorbs the water is the only thing that keeps the water from seeping further outside the classrooms and storage rooms in the church’s basement.

While it currently appears that the flooding has slowed somewhat, he said the next steps will involve ripping out carpets and parts of the walls and watching for what else the hurricane might leave behind in Michigan.
