GRANDVIEW, WV (WVNS) – SD Smith has written many books; among other things, he is a proud mountain climber.

He was born and raised in Wayne County, and even after all these years he can still remember his humble childhood.

“I was born in West Virginia, raised in West Virginia, and when I die, I’ll be dead in West Virginia. My father said we lived so far back in the woods that nobody lived behind us.”

Smith recalls that his interest in books stems from his grandfather, who served in World War II.

During his stay in England, his grandfather fell in love with English poetry and passed it on to his grandson.

Even after a missionary trip to South Africa, he never lost his love for writing and his family.

Ironically, his first set of books was written by his own daughter.

“One day we were on the porch and there were rabbits in the yard. So I decided to tell my daughter a story about rabbits. And that became The Green Ember.”

This book series enjoyed great popularity, which was underlined by fan mail and illustrations.

Even when you receive fan mail from a country as far away as China, it’s hard not to be overwhelmed.

In fact, Smith initially thought that his own mother had written the numerous reviews.

“I think they consider me a friend and I’ve had the chance to meet thousands of them.”

Smith’s latest book, The Found Boys, comes out this September and is an instant success.

This is his first book published in a conventional manner and signed copies sold out within hours.

When asked about the future, Smith hopes to continue this gift for as long as possible.

“You are not strong to dominate others, you are strong to strengthen the weak. I see my calling in encouraging the imagination and giving gifts to children. I have been given a gift, I want to give a gift.”
