“It was a real departure”: Chris Hemsworth took on the role of the antagonist in “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga”

Chris Hemsworth enjoyed his “exit” from the role of the hero in “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga”.

The 40-year-old star plays antagonist Dementus in the Mad Max prequel and loved the chance to play a villain after portraying Thor in several films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Chris told Entertainment Weekly: “It was a real departure and it was nice… I was going to say it was nice not to wear a cape, but… I had a cape in this movie. And it’s red – or will be red at some point. How absurd that is.”

“I thought it was a wonderful departure – playing the villain, transforming and taking on a completely different physicality was a lot of fun. I loved it.”

Although he enjoyed playing the villain, Chris admitted that he was a little scared before accepting the role and lacked the “confidence” he usually has before working on a big film.

He said: “I don’t really have the character under control. And I don’t quite have the confidence that I would normally have going into it.”

Hemsworth was able to overcome his fears by writing diary entries under the guise of Dementus. He believes it is beneficial for actors to take on roles that challenge them.

The Extraction star explained: “I’ve heard people talk about wanting to choose the roles that scare you. And yes, that’s kind of an actor’s statement.”

“But I think it was a good thing. I think it forces you to dig a little deeper. And the challenges, the adversity – that’s where the growth happens. I feel like I learned more on this film than anything I’ve ever done because of what was asked of all of us and because it was challenging in a wonderful way.”
