Biagioli from White Lake reaches the semifinals with birdie series

McCoy Biagioli of White Lake made 12 birdies in 39 holes on Thursday, won two matches and advanced to the semifinals of the 113th Michigan Amateur Championship at the Heather course in the Highlands at Harbor Springs.

Biagioli, an 18-year-old golfer at Ferris State University, meets with Matt Zerbel, a 29-year-old produce clerk, at 8:15 a.m. Friday.

The other semifinal, set for 8 a.m., will pit Jimmy Dales of Northville, 23, a graduate of the University of Wyoming, against Drew Miller of East Lansing, 18, who is staying close to home to play golf at Michigan State University in the fall.

The winners of these games will meet in the final at around 12:30 p.m.

For the first time, the overall winner will receive a free ticket to the 2024 U.S. Amateur Championship, which will be held August 12-18 at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota.

In the round of 16, Biagioli beat former Ferris teammate Caleb Bond of Williamston. He needed 26 holes, eight extra holes, just one short of the Michigan Amateur record for extra hole matches, before defeating Bond, now a Michigan State golfer, 1-up.

In the quarterfinals, he defeated MSU graduate Tommy Sullivan of Grosse Pointe 6 and 5.

“The goal is to win,” Biagioli said. “I’m not surprised by the way I hit the ball and putted, but mentally I was surprised. I got through 26 holes, then moved on to the next match and mentally focused on that.”
