Cactus Club launches new concert series to support accessibility

The Cactus Club’s new concert series in support of the Cactus+ Accessibility Initiative kicks off on Wednesday, July 10 at 7 p.m. with headliners Bully and opening act Scarlet Demore. Tickets are $100.

The new series raises funds for the Bay View venue to improve its accessibility.

“Accessible spaces improve the quality of life for everyone,” said Kelsey Kaufmann, owner and operator of the club, in an email. “This project is an example of how small cultural landmarks can be thoughtfully remodeled, redesigned and expanded in a way that honors their history while significantly improving their functionality.”

The venue’s initiative will happen in two phases. The first is the installation of a 23-foot ramp to the front door, costing around $90,000 – with a grant from the Ruth Foundation for the Arts, the ramp will be installed in spring 2025. Phase two is a complete expansion and renovation of the venue. The Cactus Club building dates back to the late 19th century.

“We want to create an accessible stage, restrooms, a lounge, good sightlines and an accessible bar,” says Kaufmann. “We welcome donations of all types and sizes and would not be offended if a generous dad – in the sense of all genders – donated $3 million.”

Half of ticket sales for the Cactus+ Accessibility Initiative concert series benefit accessibility efforts.

“Improving accessibility is about more than removing physical barriers, although this is a high priority given the conditions in our building,” says Kaufmann. “The Cactus Club will always be a dynamic space, committed to meeting the ever-evolving needs of the many communities we are a part of and serve. We will always be a down-home haven for queer and subcultural outsiders, and we will always be committed to better outcomes.”

The second show of the Cactus+ Accessibility Initiative concert series will take place on August 30th at 8:00 p.m. with headliner ESG – tickets are on sale now.
