Anne Hegerty on her “secret” of always wanting to be famous

Chase favourite Anne Hegerty previously admitted that she always wanted to be famous.

In a candid interview about her career, Chaser, 65, admitted that wanting to be famous was her “dirty little secret” and something she had always wanted.

Anne first rose to fame as a governess in the ITV quiz show The Chase after joining the series in 2010.

In an interview with The Sun on Sunday in 2019, Anne confessed: “My dirty little secret is that I’ve always wanted to be famous and I don’t get nervous on TV!”

Anne’s first taste of fame came in 1987 when she was a contestant on Mastermind. At the time, however, the governess’s skills were not enough and she admitted: “I wasn’t particularly successful on the show, but I joined the Mastermind Club.”

Finding the club “boring and dull”, Anne worked her way into the Grand Prix quiz scene. During her time as a quizzer, she met fellow Chaser Mark Labbett, 53, also known as The Beast. Through Mark, Anne learned of a position as a female Chaser on the show.

The timing couldn’t have been better as Anne was struggling financially and relying on benefits at the time. Anne admitted that it felt like “everything up to that moment had been hard work”.

But it’s not the fame game. While some people struggle with fame, Anne enjoys every moment and says: “I loved the fame. I paid off the mortgage, bought a new car and a few pieces of jewelry too.”

Anne is a celebrity – and she loves it!

Her popularity on “The Chase” led to Anne flying to Australia for the 2018 season of “I’m a Celebrity”.

The series made headlines because, in a departure from the usual format, it was hosted by Declan Donnelly and Holly Willoughby, with Holly standing in for Ant McPartlin when he was off TV for a year following his arrest for drink-driving.

During her time at the camp, Anne had to endure a series of gruesome tasks, drinking pureed fish eyes and eating witchetty larvae to win stars. Anne was the fifth celebrity to be voted out of the show before Harry Redknapp was crowned King of the Jungle.
