Philadelphia Flyers fans will see some familiar faces in the Da Beauty League, a 4-on-4 summer hockey league in Minnesota. Bobby Brink, Ryan Poehling and Noah Cates have been announced as participants for one of the four teams in the off-season event. The Da Beauty League season runs from July 10 to August 28 and includes teams for men’s and women’s hockey action.
The games will be played on Wednesday evenings starting at 6:00 p.m. EST, with additional games scheduled for 7:15 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. There will be a showdown for the daBL John Scott semifinals on Monday evening, August 26th, with games starting at 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. The daBL finals will take place two nights later (August 28th) as part of the previously scheduled Wednesday evening program at 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.

Three Philadelphia Flyers players under contract will compete at Braemar Arena in Edina, Minnesota. Florida Panthers defenseman Nate Schmidt selected Noah Cates and Ryan Poehling for the TRIA squad, while Vancouver defenseman Derek Forbort selected Bobby Brink for his team.
Former Flyers James van Riemsdyk and Jackson Cates were selected by Team Anderson and Team TRIA, respectively. NHL talent from outside of Philadelphia such as Jake Guentzel, Calen Addison and Jason Zucker will also be on the ice in the Da Beauty League over the next few weeks.
In total, there are four men’s teams and two women’s teams that play games every week.
OffSeason Ice Hockey Passion Project
The Da Beauty League was founded in Minnesota in 2015 to give NHL and other league players an opportunity to meet for on-ice training during the offseason. NHL teams can invite young players to a training camp, like last week at the 2024 Flyers Development Camp. After those few opportunities early in their careers, however, players are left to train on their own during the offseason. It’s not uncommon to hear athletes say there’s nothing better than game action, and that’s exactly what the daBL tries to offer in a relaxed atmosphere during the long summer months.

Summer hockey action, or “da rules,” is an adaptation of typical NHL rules with a few fun twists. There are two 23:00 minute periods of 4-on-4 action and overtime (if necessary). Overtime is a mad race between teams to see who can score three goals first in a 1-on-1 confrontation with the goalie, like you’d see in a normal OT skills contest… except after their shot, players sprint to the bench for three lamplighters to be subbed out once.
In what may be one of the greatest business deals of all time, a Minnesota-based pizza chain, Bernatello’s Pizza Inc., sponsored Za Hot Puck, a “2-minute window where goals count double.” Each team will receive one Za Hot Puck opportunity per game to cash in, with goals scored during the selected opportunity counting double for both teams.
The rules and regulations are designed to be more relaxed and provide a fun event for players and fans. According to the league’s website, “at the end of the day, it’s all about the community.” At the end of the season in August, proceeds will be distributed to several hockey nonprofits, such as the United Heroes League and the Hendrickson Foundation.
The Da Beauty League has a YouTube channel that plans to live stream content throughout the event, according to social media. The first night of the 2024 Da Beauty League games on July 10 will be hosted by the Minnesota Youth Hockey Hub YouTube channel.
