India on reports of “differences” with Russia in Ukraine war

New Delhi:

India on Wednesday dismissed as “factually incorrect” reports of disagreements with Russia over the Ukraine issue that led to the cancellation of a large delegation-level meeting during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day visit to Moscow.

“As far as I know, there are no cancellations of any program items during the Prime Minister’s visit to Moscow,” Foreign Minister Vinay Kwatra said at a press conference in Delhi.

He was responding to a question about friction in Moscow that had led to the cancellation of a meeting.

“I find it surprising, but this factually incorrect and totally misleading report contains no facts whatsoever. The Prime Minister’s visit to Moscow was extremely successful,” he said.

The talks between Prime Minister Modi and President Putin went well beyond the time allotted by both sides. “And no programme was cancelled,” he added.

Earlier, Russian state news agency TASS quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying that Prime Minister Modi and President Putin decided at their meeting in Moscow on Tuesday to keep it confidential and discuss all issues in a productive manner without the need for a major working group meeting.

When asked why there was no meeting with larger delegations following the talks between the two heads of state, Peskov explained that this was not due to any problems, but rather because the conversation between Putin and Modi, which lasted more than three hours, was attended by officials from “almost all important areas of (bilateral) cooperation”.
